Study of Population Data to Determine Renal Prevalence and Risk Factors

The objective was to develop data about the incidence and prevalence of kidney and urinary tract disease in a defined population (i.e. the denominator group was the subscriber population of the Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program for Northern California) using diagnostic data from hospitalizations, outpatient visits and various indicators of urinary tract disease in multiphasic health checkups. Time trends for multiphasic findings in individuals with more than one checkup were analyzed and, when possible, were related to basic demographic variables including age, sex, race and educational level. Characteristics of the study population to those of the entire population living in this local area were compared. Studies were also conducted in search of predicators or risk factors for severe chronic renal disease.
