摘要

The project represents an attempt to forecast the possible moped accident problem that may occur in the United States over the next five to ten years. The three basic objectives are the following: (1) formulate a procedure to forecast the nature and scope of the moped accident problem that may develop in the U.S., (2) use the procedure to predict outcomes for input values such as sales volume, usage patterns and crash rates, and (3) based on the outputs, recommend NHTSA research and safety program action. The Volume I report for the project (Hunter and Stutts, 1979) contained the findings from the literature review and data search phases of the project. This second volume presents the analysis results, utilizing the available data on U.S. moped sales, usage and accident involvement. After an introduction and overview of the project in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 gives some demographic information on U.S. moped riders and describes the typical use of the vehicle, based on information derived from the various consumer surveys reviewed. Chapter 3 then presents a descriptive analysis of moped accidents based on police-reported accident data provided by 11 U.S. states. Chapter 4 details how the available data were utilized to develop projections of the number of mopeds in use and the number of moped accidents, injuries and fatalities through 1988. The year by year projections are contained in Appendix B.
