Computer Descriptions of Curved-Surface Objects from Multiple Projected-Pattern Images.

This report describes the current status of a project concerned with computer modelling of arbitrary-shaped three-dimensional objects. The approach taken is to consider the problem in two stages: (1) the acquisition of a complete,detailed numerical description of the object surface,and (2) the conversion of this numerical description into a structured,symbolic description. The numerical surface information is extracted from a set of digitized photographs obtained while the object is illuminated by a projected grid pattern. The object is photographed several times against a calibrated back-drop,in various object-projector positions,to obtain as complete a description as possible. Work on the first stage is well along;that for the second stage,remains for the coming year.
