Science/Technology Information Sources and State Legislatures: A Manual

The manual surveys the relationships that exist between the science and technology (S & T) community and state legislatures, analyzes some of the problems and difficulties in these relationships, and suggests ways of improving them. Part 1 describes the legislative process, characteristics of legislatures, their S & T needs, and suggests ways of meeting them. It also discusses the experience of some state legislatures and scientific and professional societies in meeting those needs. Part 2 addresses problems and prospects of utilizing professional scientific societies as a resource of information to legislatures. Potential problems are identified and some solutions are suggested to improve public policy involvement. Part 3 deals with on specific experience between a state legislature and a consortium of scientists and scientific associations. An annotated bibliography on the subject of S & T is included.
