Safety Information Profile: Slips, Trips and Falls, Working Surfaces and Industrial Stairs

A safety information profile is presented for factors contributing to slips, trips, and falls on working surfaces and industrial stairs. The primary Standard Industrial Classifications include 15, 16, and 17, although these accidents are common to all industries. Accidents involving falls on the same level, falls from one elevation to another, and arrested falls are discussed. Potential contributing hazards, such as floor surfaces, slip surfaces, and personal factors are listed by type of hazard. Hazard controls are described. Injury and illness statistics are presented and industry trends are mentioned. Existing standards are listed, and names and addresses of industry associations and other interested parties are provided. It is concluded that current standards vary in dimension and address only fall restraint and physical hazards. More detailed, well designed studies that include evaluations of personal factors contributing to falls are recommended.
