Assessing Midwest Cloud Characteristics for Weather Modification

Empirical studies were conducted to develop background information useful for the assessment of the physical potential for modification of warm season precipitation in the Midwest and for the design and evaluation of a modification experiment. The studies were based on cloud measurements obtained near the freezing level in July 1973. Sample statistics were compiled of cloud physical parameters believed indicative of the vigor and age of the cloud, and also descriptive of the naturally-occurring dynamical and microphysical processes. The statistics indicated that it is possible to subjectively identify clouds in an active state of growth with conditions favorable for modification.
