A Provincial Planning and Implementation Guide for the Introduction and Maintenance of Animal Traction

The paper presents guidelines for planning a provincially based program to introduce and support animal traction (ANTRAC) projects in francophone West Africa. The inherent characteristics of ANTRAC technology and existing agricultural development organization dictate the provincial, rather than village, basis of such projects. The guide begins with a discussion of ANTRAC project planning, citing the importance of maintaining realistic expectations of farm performance; the section focuses on the information needs, farm level technical package, credit system, personnel needs and training, logistical infrastructures, and village level organization involved in ANTRAC project design. Next, some considerations concerning the animals, equipment, credit and insurance system and ANTRAC associations which necessitate some special organization in project implementation are reviewed.
