A Village Level Extension Guide for the Introduction and Maintenance of Animal Traction

The guide provides an overview of the issues arising from the introduction and support of animal traction at the village level in francophone West Africa. The author intends to provide an understanding of the interacting dynamics of animal traction in small-holder agriculture; analytical tools which will assist village agents in helping farmers make choices and reorganize their farms; and practical guidelines for the training, maintenance, and support activities necessary to various components of the system. The five major components of animal traction technology-farm power source, the equipment, the cropping system, the credit system, and village organization, are presented. A set of guidelines presenting checklists for the major elements in the introduction and maintenance of animal traction (animal choice, training, maintenance, health and finishing diets; cropping operations and crop mix; and credit capacity) is included in the form of eight appendices.
