National Research Strategy for Neurological and Communicative Disorders. Volume 2

The National Research Strategy summarizes the scope of the health problems and the research challenges the Institute must meet to carry out its mission. Chapter 1 describes the fascination, excitement, and extraordinary potential of the present moment of research on the human nervous system and its myriad disorders, and describes the NINCDS National Research Strategy in more detail. Health problems and their potential resolution through research for 15 main categories of neurological and communicative disorders are discussed in chapters 2 through 4. In each case, the state of knowledge and the needs and recommendations are given, followed by highlights of current NINCDS activities in the area and the goals the Institute has identified to respond to those needs over the next decade. Chapter 5 focuses on the vital link between a fundamental knowledge base and clinical progress and the need for a firm foundation in further knowledge development. Based on the recognition that these deliberations and recommendations attain full value only to the extent that they are acted upon, chapter 6 outlines the resources needed for implementation. Research support and manpower needs are projected for fiscal years 1979 to 1990. The remaining volumes of the National Research Strategy are the individual panel and task force reports and the summary of the public forum. They provide detailed documentation and fuller discussion of the health problems of neurological and communicative disorders.
