The invention provides a method of preventing the accumulation of the toxic products of glucose and fatty acid metabolism during myocardial ischemia and other diseases by infusng L-acetyl carnitine or its racemic mixture with D-acetyl carnitine into the body in a dosage of about from 20 to 40 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. The L-acetyl carnitine may be used to replace glucose or fatty acids in situations where the body needs a quick source of energy.
