摘要

The JOINT-I expedition of the CUEA (Coastal Upwelling Ecosystems Analysis) program was an IDOE (International Decade of Ocean Exploration) (supported cruise to the coast of northwest Africa from March through May 1974 on the R/V Atlantis 2). The long-term goal of the CUEA program was to develop models of upwelling ecosystems. These models were to depend on submodels of fish and plankton populations which, in turn, were based on measurements of standing stock, nutrients and biological and physical transfer functions. Systems were developed to monitor the rates of respiration and nitrate reduction by continuous automated analysis, to use these systems to define the temporal and spatial distribution of these rates, and to use them to reveal and define the regulatory mechanisms by which these distributions were generated. Research during this cruise was focused on these important rate processes; respiration (phytoplankton and zooplankton), ammonia excretion (zooplankton), and nitrate reduction (phytoplankton).
