Implementation of a Quality Assurance Program for Ultrasound B-Scanners

The Bureau of Radiological Health is involved in several efforts concerning diagnostic ultrasound. These include the study of biological effects, instrumentation and product evaluation, compliance with Federal regulations, and education. The Division of Training and Medical Applications have been involved in a large number of activities associated with quality assurance in diagnostic x rays. There exists a large amount of information concerning ionizing radiation-producing equipment, both from industry and from scientific professional societies. Very little information, however, is readily available to ultrasound equipment operators concerning the need or the benefits of a quality assurance program. This manual is intended for the practitioner and operator of diagnostic ultrasound B-scanning equipment, and is designed to guide the user in analyzing and improving quality of information obtained.
