The first Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HANES I), conducted during the period 1971-75, was designed to measure the nutritional status and health of the U.S. population ages 1-74 years and to obtain more detailed information on the health status and medical care needs of adults ages 25-74 years in the civilian noninstitutionalized population. The information obtained during the course of the survey consisted of: a detailed dietary interview; general medical histories & detailed histories of respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, & arthritis; health care needs & general well-being questionnaire; a general medical examination; dental, dermatological, & ophthalmological examination; anthropometry; vision tests & speech tests; x-rays of the hands, knees, hips & chest; blood and urinary laboratory tests; electrocardiogram; spirometry & pulmonary diffusion tests; and tap water samples. There were a total of 32,331 sample persons of which 31,973 were interviewed and 23,808 were examined. This data tape contains demographic characteristics and data derived from the dermatology examination given to 20,749 sample persons ages 1-74 examined during HANES I.
