An Analysis of Natural Gas Master Meter Systems (Definition and Program) from a Federal Perspective

An analysis of data collected from surveys of gas utility companies and master meter systems owners/operators was performed to determine characteristics of master meter natural gas distribution systems and gain insight about the potential safety hazard of buried or exposed piping owned by customers that is beyond utility company responsibility. Estimates, with confidence limits, were generated for each state, geographic region and nationally. Analysis of the character and makeup of the nation's master meter systems served as input to the formulation of program options available to DOT for future action regarding pipeline safety for master meter systems.
