Prevention of Blue-Green Algal Blooms -Field Verification - Morses Pond,Wellesley,Massachusetts,Summer, 1975.

In 1975,the 107acre Morses Pond in Wellesley,Massachusetts was treated with potassium permanganate for removal of iron and oxidation of colored organic complexes that reduce visibility and stimulate algal growth. The goal of this field test was to reduce total phytoplankton growth and prevent blue-green algal blooms by elimination of the key micro-nutrient iron. The results were a doubling of water visibility, a reduction in total phytoplankton and a complete absence of blue-green algal blooms during the recreation season.
