Safety Information Profile: Services Incidental to Water Transportation

A safety information profile is presented for the handling of marine cargo (Standard Industrial Classification 4463). Handling process descriptions are given for bulk, containerized, liquid bulk, heavy equipment, and liquidified gas cargoes. Hazards from chemical exposure, work surfaces, and diseases transmitted through handling of the cargo are reviewed, along with existing hazard controls. Limited accident and illness figures are tabulated, and exposure levels are mentioned. The trend toward automation in the industry is discussed. An outline of existing federal standards and a listing of names and addresses of industry associations, companies, and other interested parties are included. Worker compensation claims are considered. It is concluded that available data indicate that most accidents result from operations which are unfamiliar to the worker and for which safety standards do not exist.
