Urbanisation Contemporaine et Justice Sociale (Contempory Urbanization and Social Justice)

Israel is a country with one of the highest urbanization levels in the world. This is the combined effect of spontaneous immigration to the country's large cities, as well as that of a concerted effort by the Government to disperse the population in close to thirty development towns, many of them new. Both the spontaneous and the planned elements of urbanization are associated with a number of issues relating to the social sciences: population size, core-periphery relationships, social and economic structure of the urban environment, the provision of public services etc. The purpose of the Colloquium was to share experiences gained in the above mentioned subjects with France, where similar problems to those faced by Israel have been encountered. More specifically, the intention was to focus on the social impacts of urbanization, by introducing the notion of equity into urban and regional planning. This was done by means of an interdisciplinary approach, with the participation of economists, geographers, sociologists, regional planners and jurists, in addition to decision makers at the national and local levels.
