Development of Selective Submicrometer Particulate Fire Detectors for Underground Metal Mines. Volume I

The development of two prototype instruments for the discrete detection of submicrometer particles in metal and noncoal underground mines is described. The prime feature of the detectors is to distinguish by measurement of submicrometer particles fire conditions in the presence of high concentrations of mine ambient particles primarily produced from diesel engine exhaust. The primary sensors used were two matched cloud chamber devices. Each type of instrument demonstrated good ability to discriminate between fire and ambient diesel produced particles. The report contains literature survey, experimental charging and pyrolysis data, detector design description, and test results.
