Establishment of Pathmark Supermarket in Bedford Stuyvesant, New York: Case History

The case history reviews the role of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation (New York) in pursuading the Pathmark Division of Supermarkets General Corporation to establish a Pathmark supermarket outlet in the Bedford Stuyvesant community. The project began in 1974, when Restoration initiated discussion with Supermarkets General, and culminated in opening of the store in 1979. The project represents a business arrangement, in which a community group and a business organization joined as partners to own and operate the supermarket. It illustrates economic development opportunities which are possible through creative, business - community joint ventures. The project's implementation plans (site location, leasing arrangements, personnel selection) are detailed, with attention to the joint nature of the project.
