Fluoride Intake of Infants

This report presents a summary of discussions by a panel of experts that addressed three questions about fluoride intake by infants and children: Is 0.06mg F/100 kcal in infant formula an adequate amount; Is infant formula a good vehicle for fluoride; Are fluoride supplements appropriate for infants. The panel consensus was that: Debate about fluoride analysis methodology requires more food analysis by different methods; More information is needed on fluoride absorption in infants; More information is needed on potential benefits of fluoride during the pre-eruptive phase of dentition; Medical practitioners need to counsel parents on proper intake of fluoride from all sources; In light of current knowledge, 0.06mg F/100 kcal of formula is likely 'optimal' and supplementation, whether via formula or otherwise, may be appropriate but many variables must be considered.
