The monograph contains the lectures, comments, and part of discussions presented at the Symposium on normative approaches for prevention of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. The symposium, held in San Diego, CA, April 26-28, 1977, dealt with an examination of the sociocultural model of alcohol use, the distribution-of-consumption model of prevention, and the research and policy implications of both models. The purpose of the symposium was to examine the theoretical and empirical frameworks of current approaches to alcoholism, to identify their implications for policy, and to stimulate the integration of current research knowledge for the prevention of alcohol problems.
