New Sand Drain Consolidation Model. Volume 3. An Evaluation of the Controlled Gradient Consolidation Device

This study presents the findings relative to an evaluation of the Controlled Gradient (CG) device. A statistically based lab experiment was designed to analyze soil consolidation results by ANOVA techniques. Samples were obtained from the Vienna Marsh Area in Maryland's Eastern Shore. CG test conditions most closely approximating field conditions produced results in best agreement to conventional test results. The coefficient of consolidation obtained exhibited test variability similar to values obtained from conventional levermatic tests. This finding is generally in contrast to the results of other researchers. However, a major portion of this variability appears to be caused by test equipment limitations.
