Center for Vaccine Development: A Facility for the Study of Infectious Agents, Vaccines and Chemoprophylactic and Therapeutic Agents in Community Volunteers

Since October 1974, the University of Maryland Hospital and School of Medicine have maintained a facility, The Center for Vaccine Development (CVD), for the study of infectious diseases, vaccines and other antimicrobial agents in volunteers. A large number of volunteers from the Baltimore community have participated in clinical, laboratory and epidemiological studies in the CVD. The center has set a high standard for recruitment practices and provision of informed consent of volunteers. A system has been developed to maintain a large pool of volunteers who can be carefully and adequately screened and informed about a wide variety of clinical studies. Procedures for isolation and quarantine of inpatient volunteers have been established; and problems associated with isolation have been resolved.
