Welding Distortions of Ship Blocks during Assembly

The aim of the measurements described in this paper was to clarify the magnitude of welding distortions and the effect of welding sequence on them during the assembly of certain blocks in a shipyard. Also some analytical calculations of welding distortions were made for comparison purposes. In the study, welding distortions of altogether six ship blocks were measured. The blocks were welded in two different welding sequences, one of which was in accordance with the Finnish standard TES 8142 'Welding. Tacking and welding sequence', and the other was the welding sequence, normally used in the shipyard. As a result it can be said that the difference between distortions caused by different welding sequences is not remarkable. With the analytical methods published in literature, some estimation of welding distortions of more complicated structures can also be made.
