Are Public and Recreational Water Supplies in Montana Safe from 'Yersinia enterocolitica' Gastroenteritis

Yersinia enterocolitica has been implicated as the causative agent in numerous waterborne gastroenteritis. The detection system for this pathogenic bacterium is not widely used in the sampling of water supplies. Because some of the sources of previous human exposure has been drinking water supplies, this study was undertaken to sample and study public water supplies, e.g., drinking-fountains in public rest areas on interstate highways, public camp grounds, public swimming pools, surface waters, rivers, streams, and irrigation ditches. Of the 89 samples collected, only a few yield Yersinia enterocolitica.
