Procurement of Primary Reference Materials. Silica-Free Polydimethlysiloxane and FEP Teflon

This report covers the first six months of a three year contract for the fabrication, characterization and distribution of two Primary Reference Materials; Silica-Free Polydimethylsiloxane (PSX) and FEP Teflon. To date, the major emphasis has been on PSX. Using GPC, DSC, TGA, IR, yc, Intrinsic Viscosity, Bulk Viscosity, GC, Solvent Extraction/Swelling, Emmission Spectroscopy and Wet Chemical Analysis preliminary work on the following tasks has begun: Procurement and Characterization of Silicone Substrate sheet and tubing, Synthesis and characterization of silica-free PSX coating fluid, Purification and Characterization of silicone substrates and Fabrication of coated silicone substrates. A sheet coating apparatus has been designed for use within a Class 100 laminar flow/fume hood and a tubing coating apparatus is currently under development. A feasibility study of methods for producing PSX beads by coating and direct coagulation is presently underway. A blown film process for FEP has been evaluated and appears promising. Extrusion of FEP using an extruder built from conventional materials did not add detectable corrosion products to the extrudate.
