Evaluation of BMCS Accident Files

The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the quality of the Bureau of Motor Carrier Safety's file of property damage and injury motor carrier accidents. The comparison data base comprised of 2112 truck accident records collected by BioTechnology, Inc., during a 1 1/2-year accident investigation effort in six states. For the evaluation, 198 reports from each file were able to be paired. A one-on-one comparison of 38 variables common to each file was made. In general, there was quite good agreement between the two data bases. The degree of the discrepancies varied according to the nature of the variable and the type of data being collected.
