Need for Tighter Controls Over Fuel Purchased by the Postal Service

The United States Postal Service uses nearly 90 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel each year. In fiscal year 1980, the cost of this fuel is expected to be $100 million, and the cost will increase as fuel prices continue to rise. The Service needs to change the way it controls fuel. GAO identified a number of practices which make the Service's procurement and use of fuel susceptible to fraud, abuse, and waste.
