An Analysis of the Role and Function of Head Nurses and Supervisors in Order to Plan Staff Development Programs

This project explored the differences in role, function perceptions of head nurses and supervisors at Albany Veterans Administration Medical Center. Eleven nurse supervisors and twenty head nurses participated in the project. A survey type questionnaire was designed to test the null hypothesis that there is no significant differences in the head nurses' and supervisors' perception of their role and functions. The questionnaire contained the following eight elements: (1) management effectiveness, (2) role, (3) non-prescribed functions, (4) assertiveness, (5) clinical functions, (6) administration, (7) research, and (8) education. The data analysis revealed no significant differences in role and functions-perceptions of head nurses and supervisors.
