Safety Assessment of Denver Type I and Standard Type II Barricades via Full Scale Tests. Volume I. Executive Summary

This report is a summary discussion of tests conducted for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on traffic barricades. The full report may be obtained for reference from Office FHRS, HRS-12 upon request. A series of tests was conducted on Denver Type I Barricades and Standard Type II Barricades in May and June of 1979. The tests were conducted to acquire comparative damage data for the two types of barricades. The Denver Type I Barricades were tested in six different orientations and the Standard Type II Barricades were tested in four different orientations. All orientations of both barricades were impacted with a 1974 Chevrolet Vega vehicle at an impact speed of nominally 96 kmph (60 mph). All tests were recorded with pre and post-impact still photos and with high speed movies during the impact event. Only minor sheet metal damage resulted from any of the impacts. The barricades never touched the windshield as a result of impact in any orientation.
