Automation in Airline Reservation and Ticketing Systems

Various automated reservations and ticketing systems have been developed by U.S. air carriers and data communications companies in recent years. The computer terminals that access these automated systems are being placed in travel agencies in the United States. The report contains a description of the major computer systems currently available to travel agencies, such as American Airlines' SABRE, United's APOLLO, TWA's PARS, and ITT's MARS PLus. Also included are a comparative analysis, interface capabilities, built-in biases and limitations, and capacity and cost information. The information in the report was compiled after conducting literature searches and personnel interviews. The major automated systems were reviewed in depth with system demonstrations augmented by question and answer periods. No attempt is made to recommend one system over another but rather to present as much information as possible on each system.
