Analysis of Fire Dectectors Test Methods/Performance: A Summary Report

This summary report describes the development of a critique of existing detector testing and offers limited guidance on installation criteria related to test results. Broad ranges of performance were established and compared reflecting the potential for application of each fire detection unit in a variety of environments. The tests were done in four spaces of different configurations. The testing was done to determine detector's effectiveness in terms of life safety. Analysis of the relationship between life safety and property protection clearly indicates that building volume plays a strong role in the life safety aspects of fires. It was found that as the criteria for determining detector effectiveness in terms of safety to life differ from those directed to determining effectiveness in terms of property protection, the testing of detectors for life safety must also differ. Tests were conducted with flaming and smoldering fires and results have indicated maximum distances or detector placement for all fires in corridors and in large area rooms.
