Materials Aspects of Inert Gas Systems for Cargo Tank Atmosphere Control

The study was undertaken to identify materials problems that might arise in inerting systems in cargo tankers. Inerting systems provide a means of replacing the atmosphere over the cargo in a ship's tanks with an inert gas to reduce the possibility of explosion. This study identifies design and materials requirements for the hot gas area, piping systems, blowers, valves, instrumentation, and control and alarm systems comprising inerting systems.
