Intake Flow Fields for a Zooplankton Pump Sampling System

This study is a theoretical and experimental approach which provides the basic concepts and data needed to develop an efficient pumping system for sampling zooplankton. Many zooplankters have the ability to sense sampling gear and avoid capture. This results in their being undersampled; density calculations are thus inaccurate. This report presents the hydrodynamic and biological principles which govern zooplankton pump performance, and experimental results of intake flow field observations. The flow fields surrounding twelve intake forms (throat diameters of 4 and 7 inches and outside diameter of 12 inches - and two intake pipes were obtained in a flume. The pumping rate of about 33 gal/min was not varied.
