Demonstration of a Regional Burn Care System Part IV: Research Activities - Task C-3 - Simulation of Donor Sources for a Regional Skin Bank

A two year program designed to stimulate donor sources for a Regional Skin Bank has resulted in a twofold increase in the number of actual donations received. Twice as many source referrals were necessary to achieve this increase in donor frequency. Efforts to increase public awareness of the need and use of donated skin were important. However, the key elements that resulted in this increase were the following: (1) Establishment of the San Diego Transplantation Council which provided centralized coordination of the regional organ and tissue program, (2) persistent and focused efforts to educate and establish referral cooperation with key allied health professions, (3) effective liaison with the County Medical examiners and (4) frequent inservice education programs and personal contacts with prompt feedback to special intensive care nursing staffs.
