An Operational Mathematical Procedure for Linking Economic Process Models and Engineering Design Methods

A methodology is presented which can be reduced to computer code which enables nonlinear mathematical methods of engineering design to support the conventional linear process optimization used in economic analysis. This project investigated a computational method by which an engineering design model accurately describing the fundamental nonlinearities could be interfaced with and solved simultaneously with a conventional linear economic process model. A series of computations was done showing the economic effects of constraining the biological oxygen demand (BOD) in wastewater discharged by petrochemical plant.
