An Appraisal of Cultural and Paleontological Resources within Sections 1 and 2 of the Proposed Mirdan Canal Project, Garfield and Valley Counties, Nebraska. Volume I

A study conducted to locate and evaluate cultural resources within Sections 1 and 2 of the proposed Mirdan Canal project was initiated under two contractual agreements between the University of Nebraska and the Water and Power Resources Service during the summer of 1978. A thorough search of literature and records relevant to the project area has been completed. An intensive (100% coverage) pedestrian survey of all accessible project lands resulted in the identification of 31 locations of contemporary and early twentieth century material. No paleontological or prehistoric Native American sites or materials were located. Based on the results of this study, further investigations prior to the proposed construction of Sections 1 and 2 of the Mirdan Canal project are not recommended. However, it is suggested that construction crews be made aware of the potential for encountering buried cultural resources and that professional archeologists/paleontologists be contacted should this occur.
