A Study of the Characteristics and Pollution Potential of Land Spread Domestic Septage on Groundwater Quality

In order to assess the pollution potential of the practice of land spreading septage and to protect Minnesota's ground and surface water quality, a three-year study was undertaken to establish (1) the characterization of domestic septage in Minnesota, and (2) evaluate the effect of land spreading of domestic septage on groundwater nitrate concentration and microbial populations. Parameters used to characterize septage included total solids, total volatile solids, pH, chemical oxygen demand, conductivity, ammonia nitrogen, total kjeldahl nitrogen, and fecal coliforms. Results are given in the report.
