Development of Electrical Energy Converters to Power and Control Left Heart Assist Devices

Development and evaluation of a low-speed torque motor energy converter (MK IV) was continued with emphasis placed on reliability and component improvement. In vitro compound tests have exceeded one year. Certain fabrication and lubrication problems have been identified and resolved. A composite diaphragm is being evaluated. The motor has been mated successfully with several left ventricular assist pumps and tested in vivo. Ten calf studies have been performed.
