Dynamic Properties of an Eight-Story Prefabricated Panel Building

The results of forced and ambient vibrations studies of an eight-story apartment building, constructed with prefabricated wall panel and slab elements are presented. Dynamic characteristics, such as resonant frequencies, damping, and vertical and horizontal mode shapes of the structure were determined and correlated with analytical results using the computer program TABS-77. Rigid floor diaphragm action and serious structure-foundation interaction were observed. Including the foundation flexibility in the analytical model resulted in resonant frequencies and mode shapes showing excellent agreement with the test data. The results of full scale dynamics studies of another, structurally identical, 12-story apartment building with a basically identical floor plan, are also presented and indicate a direct proportionality between structural height and fundamental periods.
