The Status of the Marine Fishery Resources of the Northeastern United States, Northeast Fishery Management Task Force

During the last twenty-five years, the fishery resources of the waters off the coast of the Northeastern United States underwent a large increase in fishing mortality. The fishery changed from one concentrated on relatively few stocks to a wide-based industry directed at the total finfish and squid biomass. Total resource abundance declined as a result and the annual harvest exceeded total productivity. Since 1975, the trend has been reversed, overall fishing effort has declined and the stocks have begun to recover, now approaching levels that existed prior to entry of the distant-water fleets.
