Estimates of Natural and Fishing Mortality for White Shrimp in the Gulf of Mexico

Rates of survival, fishing mortality and natural mortality must be estimated for the commercially important shrimp species in the Gulf of Mexico to have effective management of the fisheries. A mark-recapture study on white shrimp (Penaeus setiferus) carried out in Louisiana in 1977 provides data for white shrimp survival and mortality estimates. This paper presents estimates of fishing and natural mortality which are effort-free or based on an assumption of constant fishing effort over a limited period of time.
