A Laboratory Test to Evaluate the Resistance of Refractories to Molten Slags

As part of the Federal Bureau of Mines project to develop new or improved materials for metallurgical furnace applications, research was conducted to develop a reproducible laboratory test for evaluating the resistance of refractories to molten slags. Tests were conducted with a slag representative of slag used to produce mineral wool. A rotating cylindrical furnace was lined with the brick being tested, and it was operated at temperatures up to 1,660 C for periods ranging from 8 to 32 hours. The effects of such variables as slag temperature, rotational velocity, charge rate, and contact time on refractory erosion were determined. The research demonstrated the reproducibility of the test procedure developed.
