Direction Finding from Arterials to Destinations

The synthesis will be of special interest and usefulness to highway engineers and others who seek information on methods employed to aid motorists in finding the way to desired destinations after exiting from the arterial network. Examples of relevant federal and state standards and regulations are included in this report. Highway agencies have developed various procedures to assist motorists in finding the way from arterial highways to destinations in unfamiliar areas. The report documents the range of technical, legal, political, social, and environmental factors affecting the development of information systems designed to meet drivers' direction-finding information needs.
