Rehabilitation of Natural Oyster Reefs Destroyed or Damaged by a Natural Disaster

An Oyster Reef Rehabilitation Program was initiated by the Mississippi Bureau of Marine Resources on August 20, 1979. The purpose of this work, which involved the planting of 87,000 cubic yards of clamshells, was to ameliorate the adverse impact of heavy spring rains and floodwater diversion on oyster production in coastal waters of Mississippi by providing for suitable substrate upon which a new oyster crop could develop.
