Development and Evaluation of Self-Management Systems for Children with Asthma

This report describes the third year of a four-year study to develop and evaluate an educational program aimed at increasing asthmatic children's self-management capabilities and reducing their dependency on health care system. Major tasks covered in the report are the conduct of three intervention strategies (educational, peer/family support group, and behavior training sessions) with the experimental groups, the development of a revised and combined intervention program to be provided during Year 04; the development of a tailored intervention plan to provide individualized education for a subgroup of children with severe asthma and/or management problems; and ongoing data collection and analysis activities. Included in the appendix are objectives and a sample lesson plan for the peer/family support groups, and a sample script and flow-charts for the revised year 04 intervention.
