Baseline Data on Medical Device Industries in the Census of Manufacturers

Following enactment of the Medical Device Amendments of 1976, FDA initiated a series of studies to assess the 'baseline' conditions in the medical device industries. These studies are designed to: (1) provide a basis for informed regulation, and (2) supply appropriate benchmarks for subsequent measures of the effect of regulation--both intended and unintended. This study is the first of this series. It compiles data from the Department of Commerce to profile the medical device industry as represented by establishments in five Standard Industrial Codes. Growth and geographic distribution, in sales, employment and number of establishments, and competition and concentration are examined.
