Nonacademic Career Options for Science and Engineering Ph.D.'s

Jobs outside of academe can be rewarding and satisfying to doctorate-level scientists and engineers. This conclusion was based on analysis of the responses of over 8,000 doctorate-holders in 12 fields (biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, political science, anthropology, psychology and sociology) to an 8-page questionnaire that covered educational background and work history, focusing in particular on three career outcomes: salary, research productivity, and job satisfaction. The sample comprised three groups: those employed in higher education (both faculty and nonfaculty academics), in government (chiefly the U.S. Civil Service), and in the private sector.
