Trailing Cables and Splices: Shielded Cables

An analysis of low-voltage shielded trailing cables is performed to develop a method to calculate the differences in operating costs between shielded and nonshielded cables. Two types of shield constructions are considered for the three major underground coal mining methods. Data from laboratory and in-mine tests are presented along with an analysis of safety benefits. Recommendations for further investigations are proposed. Example calculations with sensitivity analyses are presented. Recommendations for further investigation include cost impact considerations.
