The Sediments of Presque Isle Harbor, Lake Superior

Measurements by anodic stripping and atomic adsorption of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc in sediment core segments and overlying interfacial and interstitial waters in Presque Isle Harbor, Marquette, Michigan are reported. These data, plus water chemical parameters, particle size distribution, cation exchange capacity and total volatile solids are used to evaluate the nature of trace metals in the variable sandy sediments of the harbor. Results show metals mobilized generally away from the sediment-water interface in more highly disturbed areas with little mobilization in the less disturbed areas. The metals data plus a comparison series of analyses of surficial sediments for COD, TKN, oil and grease and total PO4(-3) indicate that the present classification of harbor sediments which has required on-land disposal of dredging spoils is not consistent with present contaminant levels.
